On the 26th February 2021 the Supreme Court decided that Shamima Begum could not return to the UK and she would be stripped of her British nationality.

Shamima Begum is a British born Bangladeshi woman who left her home aged 15 with two school friends in 2015 (both of whom are believed to be dead) to join ISIS in Syria. In 2015 she married an ISIS soldier and went on to have 3 children who have all sadly passed away.

After getting in touch with Sky News she had been transported to a different camp in Syria for her personal safety because she has been denounced as a traitor by Isis women. Not many people have chosen to help fight the decision because of statements said in her interview with Sky News. When asked about how she felt about the executions she replied with” I was ok with the beheadings”. Then when asked about how people should feel towards her she told the reporter, “I think people should feel sympathy for me”.

However, my view is that the supreme court made the wrong decision because she was only a 15-year-old child when she left, a child who could be easily influenced and vulnerable to exploitation by IS soldiers. Still only 21 now, if given the right help and guidance she could go on to live a long and safe life and teach others about not making the same mistakes she did.

The next two quotes are from two year 10 school boys who are both the same age as Shammima Begum (15) was when she left for Syria.

Ben Copeman: “What has she done wrong, there is no evidence to prove she caused any harm or will cause any commotion if she is let back into the UK.

Charlie Cushing:” I agree with the courts decision to not let her return, because she could influence other people in the UK to do similar things because there are no consequences.
