As we near the end of the current lockdown, Matt Hancock has announced that Covid-19 is now “now back under control”. The health secretary also revealed that there has been a 30% decrease in the amount of cases in England last week. Hancock said “The light of dawn is on the horizon.”

So can I visit family at Christmas?

Travel restrictions will be eased to allow families to come together to celebrate and up to three households will be able to form a “bubble” to meet at home for Christmas, a place of worship or an outdoor public place.

While it will be possible to travel, experts and the Prime Minister are urging people to consider the potential consequences. The Prime Minister has said “families will need to make a careful judgement about the risk of visiting elderly relatives.”

While speaking to local residents about how they plan to spend Christmas the responses were varied, while some are choosing to visit their extended family, others are opting to stay at home. Many people admitted that this will be their first Christmas separate from their families.

What about New Year’s Eve?

Richmond and Twickenham Times:

England will return to the tier system before New Year’s Eve, and bars and pubs will be closed. As well as this the annual London fireworks display has been cancelled.
