Police and fire crews were called to Best Fresh Food in St Margarets Road at 2.24am this morning to reports of a collision.
A vehicle had apparently struck a shop then driven away, according to a police spokesman.
Jancy Karunanithy, who works at the sister store Broadway Stores in St Margarets, said: "The car went into the shop straight away - the neighbours heard some sound and called the police.
"The landlord of the flat above called us at 6am to say there had been an accident at the shop."
A Richmond firefighter said: "By the time we got there the car had gone.
"We just made sure the shop was safe structurally."
A man was later arrested for a suspected drink driving offence.
