Sir – As a guest of last Friday night’s Have I Got News for You panel (usually a lighthearted and witty BBC television panel show of mostly acceptable humour), rather than endeavouring to temper/quell the panel’s take of the situation following Andrew Sachs’ despicable torment, Vincent Cable MP saw fit not only to join in but add to it.

Have I now got views for you.

As a Member of Parliament, surely Dr Cable should be standing for decency, not mocking it.

Joining in with the panel as he did, he – in my eyes – condoned the BBC director general’s seeming “shock horror”

that 35,000-plus BBC licence fee payers had the temerity to voice their complete and utter disgust at his acceptance to date of the cruelty, depravity, lewdness and baseness (all in the name of creativity, I may add) that certain BBC drama, comedy and other programmes had sunk to.

Has Mr Cable no realisation of the fact that society is becoming desensitised by certain BBC radio and television programmes being broadcast not only nationally but worldwide?

And that only demoralisation can follow if such programmes are not taken off the air and forthwith?

If, on the other hand, Dr Cable, not being able to quell the situation, had walked off the programme as, indeed, he most certainly would have been able to, I would now be applauding him rather than signing off.
