The London Mayoral elections are about to start again, after being postponed from 2020 due to covid. Voting begins on Thursday 6th May, and there are a total of 20 candidates running this year, more than ever before. These candidates include the current Mayor of London, Labour’s Sadiq Khan, and sees the return of the infamous Count Binface. Other notable candidates include the Conservative Party’s Shaun Bailey, and the Green Party’s Sian Berry.
Sadiq Khan is looking to continue his support for the cycling infrastructure in London, in his fight to reduce the impact on the environment Londoners make. He is also aiming to help people whose work was affected by the coronavirus to get new jobs. Of course, Sadiq Khan has listed all of his plans for London on his campaign website.
Shaun Bailey aims to prevent and reduce crime, especially amongst the youth. He is also looking to build 100,000 cheap houses for young Londoners, and improving our transport to support free travel for under 18s and over 60s. There are many more policies, which can be found on Shaun Bailey’s campaign website.
As the party’s name implies, the Green Party, with Sian Berry at the helm, aim to improve London’s impact on the environment, but are of course also aiming to tackle other issues similar to the other candidates. Sian Berry is looking to provide cheap housing, stop the demolition of estates, form a renter’s union, as well as providing green energy for crossrail and cleaning the air in general. As with the others, there are a whole list of policies which can be found online.
It is important to research all the candidates, as these are just a few brief lists of what you can expect from each candidate, each candidate is proposing much more, and there are many more candidates in the race.
