INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY AT LEH
Friday the 8th of March is international women’s day and Lady Eleanor Holles school has had a week of events to inspire pupils of the school and raise awareness about issues faced by women worldwide. On Tuesday 4th of March the creative directors of the school organised an assembly to celebrate women in the school and to give teachers a platform to raise their views.
There is a five person panel of inspirational women in the workplace and the obstacles they have faced and how they have overcome them. This includes a number of factors such as race, gender and male attitudes. Alicia Saili, New Zealand and Harlequins prop is leading P.E lessons where she will be teaching traditional Maori dance to the pupils.
In addition to this there will be a mufti day where students will be encouraged to wear something purple and bring in £2 or a pack of pads as a donation for the charity Bloody Good Period. The charity aims end period poverty on the ground by giving these products to those who can’t afford them, and providing long term menstrual education to those less likely to access it. The school wants to support women across the world and this starts with something as simple as supporting girls who do not have access to to sanitary products.
Around the school there are posters advertising the work of inspirational women, from Emma Watson to Katherine Johnson who coded many launch projects for NASA to the moon. Polls have been put up to help pupils realise the position of women around the world. Questions include which country has unjust laws regarding women: India or the U.K (the answer being both!).
It is a day to recognise and celebrate the important and impressive achievements of women globally and values including justice and dignity guide the day and provide influence for events which take place on a local and global scale.
