Two former world champions will meet in the second round of the Crucible as John Higgins and Stuart Bingham prepare to do battle.

Higgins was hopeful of facing fellow Scot Graeme Dott but will have to make do with an Englishman in the opposite corner after Bingham edged a nervy decider 10-9.

Higgins didn’t have quite the same worries as he edged out Mark Davis 10-7 – though preparations for the second session of the match were far from ideal, with his brother Jason suffering a nasty fall in snooker’s theatre of dreams.

“My brother had a freak accident, he came off the final step and his trainer got caught on the step, his weight has gone onto his knee and he’s fractured his kneecap,” he said.

“Hopefully he can get an operation sooner rather than later.

“I was there with him at the hospital for six or seven hours, we’ll try and get him back to Glasgow as quick as we can.

“Being at 6-3 from the first session, I felt focused but after the break I was a bit like a rabbit in the headlights.

“I was lucky to win the game, Mark let me off the hook a few times and I was missing some unforgiveable balls.”
