Twenty members of Elmbridge Phoenix Swimming Club travelled to Crystal Palace to compete in the Surrey County 50m Sprint Gala and despite being only a small club, they claimed three goals, a silver and three bronzes.
Once again Victoria Beaney was Elmbridge's star swimmer. She won gold in the butterfly and the breaststroke, and bronze in the freestyle in the 12/13-year-old group. In the butterfly, not only did she do an impressive time of 31.96 seconds, but she also left the field behind, being three seconds faster than the silver medallist. She was also fourth in the backstroke.
Radhika Gajraj, 13, also swam brilliantly to win gold in a personal best time of 34.70 seconds in an exciting backstroke race.
James Burke claimed the silver in the 10/11 years backstroke in a personal best time of 40.86 seconds. Team-mate Craig Stewart, despite having the slowest entry time, swam a superb breaststroke to win the bronze.
Michael Garside, swimming against boys a year older, produced an excellent race to win the bronze medal in the 50m backstroke for 12/13 years.
