Ranelagh Harriers' recently married Sarah Smith, formerly Sarah Seal, led from the start to smash the course record at the Hogsmill Ladies five-mile road race organised by Epsom Allsorts around the Hogsmill river at West Ewell on Sunday.

Smith led home the record 250-strong field in 29 minutes 31 seconds, beating Ranelagh captain Anna McLaughlin (31:37) and Joan Lennon from Steyning (33:28).

Canterbury's Jenni Van Deelen was first veteran in fifth place (33:56), with South London Harriers' Viv Mitchell first veteran over 40 (34:10).

Ranelagh's Sonia Rowland was first over-45 (36:20), and Epsom & Ewell's Christine Flynn first over-50 (37:24).

Next to finish, six seconds later, was Epsom's Marion Jakeman, who was first in the over-55 category, with clubmate Moira O'Leary top over-60 in 41:14. Stragglers' Madge Bradsell was first over-70 finisher in 142nd (48:15).

Ranelagh took the mob team trophy.

l Thames Hare & Hounds and Wimbledon Windmilers took men's and women's team honours in the annual Parkland Relay organised by Thames Hare & Hounds in Richmond Park.

Thames' John McFarlane (14 minutes 25 seconds), Matt Jones (15:34), Nic Gould (15:43) and Nick Altmann (14:33) led on all four legs to win in 1:00:15 from Wimbledon Windmilers (1:05:56) and Guildford & Godalming (1:06:14).

Marathon man McFarlane, who did the fastest individual time, with Altmann second best, helped Thames B team finish seventh.

Thames' Simon Wurr, running for Westminster School, where he is a master, was the only other competitor to finish inside 15 minutes, clocked 14:46 after he moved through from eighth to second place on his leg.

l Kingston & Polytechnic's Gareth Cook defends his senior men's hammer title when the Surrey track and field championships are held at Kingsmeadow on Saturday and Sunday (10am-6pm).

The main opposition is likely to come from clubmate Kyle Stevens and his brother Gavin.

Worcester Park's Phil Wicks is to defend his senior men's 5000m title on Saturday and the 1500m championship on Sunday.

Kingston & Polytechnic's all-rounder Dominique Blaize won a hat-trick of titles in the women's U17 events last year the high jump, long jump and shot but limits herself to just the junior women's 200m and 100m hurdles this weekend.

Richmond & Twickenham's talented Jo White defends her girls' U15 100 and 200m and long jump titles.

l Any runner inside 24 minutes 18 seconds in Sunday's Coombe Hill five-mile road race will win £150.

That carrot is being dangled by race organiser and former international Grenville Tuck to attract a top-class field to the event, which is in aid of the Coombe Hill Junior School where Tuck is caretaker.

Last year's winner, John Downes from London Irish, will try to achieve a hat-trick of wins, while women's winner, Barbara Yff from Serpentine Running Club, is also due on the starting line.

The event is supported by Coombe Residential estate agents, who have supplied 600 commemorative T-shirts, the Sweatshop, Atrium Restaurant at Kingston Lodge Hotel and the Malden Centre.

First prize is an overnight stay for two at the hotel.

The race starts in George Road (9.45am) and is over a fast, flat three-lap course mainly on private roads on the Coombe estate. It finishes at Marymount School, George Road.

Entries are being taken on the day but there is a 300-entry limit.

After the main race, there is a 1.8-mile fun run for U15s, starting at 10.45am.
