Surbiton 5 Belper 2: SURBITON are in with a good chance of only their third ever semi-final appearance in the English national cup as a result of this excellent fifth round win on Saturday and Monday's subsequent quarter-final draw.

The Long Ditton-based National Premier Division side raced into a 4-0 lead in the first 23 minutes at Sugden Road against their National Division One opponents, considerably helped by the first appearance this season of their three current Great Britain Olympic squad players.

With Brett Garrard in dominant form at centre back, Ben Hawes scored from his side's first penalty corner after four minutes.

The third GB squad member, James Wallis, then set up Scottish international James Burns to slide in and score four minutes later, before Hawes converted a second penalty stroke on 14 minutes.

Then it was the turn of Surbiton's former GB midfield dynamo, Stuart Head, also making his first appearance of the season - but in his case from temporary retirement - to score at a penalty corner on 23 minutes.

The depleted Derbyshire visitors, without four regular starters, did well to pull back two goals in the second half.

Mark Whatling scored from a penalty corner with ten minutes remaining. James Hewitt made it even closer from open play seven minutes later, but a second penalty corner goal from Head soon after the restart put an end to any Belper thoughts of an unlikely recovery.

The quarter-final draw for Sunday February 1 has given Surbiton a home tie against Holcombe from Kent, the only non-national league club left in the competition, who play three divisions lower in the regional South Premier One league.

Surbiton: Sheridan T; Williamson (Head), Garrard, Dye (Larratt), Richardson (Van Slooten/Sheridan); Pinnock, Hawes, Stagno, Steen (Dunn); Burns, Wallis.
