Dillon Phillips admitted it was hard to keep his emotions in check after Charlton’s 4-3 penalty shoot-out win over Doncaster Rovers on Friday night.

The Addicks booked their play-off place at Wembley in dramatic fashion after Rovers captain Tommy Rowe put his spot-kick wide, sparking a pitch invasion from a sell-out Valley.

In a week where Aston Villa, Derby County and Charlton’s opponents Sunderland progressed to the play-off finals of their respective leagues, the goalkeeper revealed the wild celebrations on the final whistle were hard to contain.

“We respected the way Sunderland celebrated, clap the fans and then ‘let’s go again,’ but when you win like we did it’s hard to not to celebrate, we were jumping around like lunatics, we are buzzing!

“All week I’ve watched all the games, the celebrations are so good but yet none of the teams have actually achieved anything, but in the heat of the moment, it’s hard to not celebrate!

The 25,428 crowd at The Valley was the biggest since 2012 and Phillips admitted it added an extra pressure which may have affected an under-par performance.

“It was a different atmosphere to what we’ve had all season," he said.

“The atmosphere’s been good but it’s not been that good.

“At times it probably made us not play as well as we can but we got the result we wanted and there’s one step to go now.

“We’ll regroup and go again.”

Charlton will face Sunderland in a repeat of their last visit to the national stadium on Sunday, after the Black Cats overcame Portsmouth on Thursday night.

The Addicks were victorious in 1998 as they won promotion to the Premiership with a 7-6 shootout win after a 4-4 draw, and Phillips believes they are capable of repeating the feat.

“There’s pressure on everyone, there’ll be a big crowd and two teams with the same goal.

“It’s one game at the end of the day.

“I believe we are good enough to beat them and go through.

“I don’t see why not, no one fears anyone.

“We’ve a good mix of young pro’s and ex-pros’.

“It’s been a great journey and hopefully we can finish it off.”
