Doncaster were the best team to visit Charlton this season according to Lee Bowyer.

After seeing his side lose 3-2 on the night, Bowyer’s men won the two-legged play off via a penalty shoot-out in an evening of high drama.

Despite the raw emotion clearly felt, Bowyer was full of praise for his opponents.

“They’re the best to come here this season by a mile,” he said.

“We’ve only lost two games here all season.

“No team has done what Doncaster have done to us here.

“They played so well, caused us so many problems.

“They should be really proud of themselves.”

Charlton made the perfect start thanks to a Krystian Bielik header, but a Tommy Rowe effort and a late Andy Butler header saw the visitors deservedly send the tie in to extra time.

A John Marquis strike and an instant Darren Pratley score sent the tie to penalties where the Addicks were victorious after Marquis and Rowe both missed from the spot.

Such was the performance of Grant McCann’s men at a 25,428 sell-out Valley, Bowyer went in to the visiting dressing room to show his appreciation.

“I’ve never done it before,” he said.

“I felt that I just wanted to congratulate them and not get too down, because what they gave there was unreal.

“They’re not my players but I wanted to give them respect, and to know their club will be proud of them because they’ve given everything.”
