A Sergi Canos inspired Brentford dented Leeds United’s promotion bid as they ran out deserved winners at Griffin Park.

Neal Maupay and Canos goals either side of the break shook a Marcelo Bielsa’s side that knew they could ill-afford to drop any points with promotion rivals Sheffield Untied winning earlier in the day.

The visitors failed to capitalise on early defensive errors before Thomas Frank’s men found their stride against a frustrated Yorkshire outfit who will feel aggrieved Patrick Bamford’s penalty appeal at 0-0 was turned down.

Back to back defeats for Leeds leaves them three points behind the Blades in second as the Bees climb to 15th.

Quick Start

Leeds, buoyed by the relentless travelling support started well and their high press should’ve seen them take an early lead.

Tyler Roberts failing to punish Julian Jeanvier’s error as his heavy touch was smothered by an alert Luke Daniels in goal.

Moments after losing influential wing Ezgjan Alioski to injury Leeds looked like they should’ve had a penalty as Bamford was upended after getting on the end of a loose Maupay pass.

Referee Keith Stroud waved play-on as the Bees faithful breathed a sigh of relief.

Thomas Franks’ men, second best for the opening exchanges, eventually found their stride and it was through Sergi Canos.

The versatile Spaniard drew a spectacular save from Kiko Casilla before finally teeing up the opener shortly before half time.

His pin-point through ball allowed Maupay to race clear and slot home his 24th of the season.

Canos the Star

Bielsa added his top scorer Kemar Roofe to the action shortly after the break but it was Brentford who doubled their lead.

It was the same combination again but this time it was Maupay playing the provider.

His neat through ball finding the Spaniard who’s effort found the back of the net after a fortuitous ricochet.

Romaine Sawyers superbly set Canos free five minutes later but this time the winger was outwitted by Casilla after a run that started in his own half.

Canos, the star of the show himself limped off with ten to go to a huge round of applause as the ‘ole’s’ started to ring out at Griffin Park and Leeds promotion hopes took a hit.

Key Moment Of The Match

Patrick Bamford should’ve been awarded a penalty mid-way through the first half with the game goalless. Some loose Brentford passing gifted the forward possession in the box and on second glance it looked like he was clipped.

Man Of The Match

Sergi Canos – At the heart of everything good Brentford did. Rewarded with a goal he thoroughly deserved. Wing, Number ten, right back, he can do it all.
