Sutton Common Rovers secured runners up spot in the Combined Counties Premier division this season, when they picked up a 2-1 win over third placed Abbey Rangers on Saturday.

Rovers started brightly with Matt Farrell having a shot deflected behind for a corner in the opening minutes, and having dominated the opening exchanges, without finding a breakthrough, they eventually took the lead on 32 minutes, just as Abbey were starting to comeback into the game.

Brendan Murphy-McVey took a quick free kick, Kery Kedze pressured the Abbey defence in to an error, and Ollie Twum was left to fire into an empty net for 1-0.

Aside from a few long shots, Ollie Ellaway was relatively untroubled, and Rovers ended the half strongly. Jack Field bought off a superb save from a fierce Phil Page drive, before Page increased the lead on the stroke of half time.

Richmond and Twickenham Times:

A stunning move involving Kedze and Murphy-McVey ended with Farrell squaring to Page who crashed the ball home.

Rovers started the second half positively, but were rocked just shy of the hour when Abbey reduced the arrears with a comical goal.

Inside their half, but with nowhere to go, Page played a long ball back to Ellaway. The Rovers keeper though clearly had other things on his mind as he let the ball roll under his foot and trickle over the line for the most ridiculous of own goals.

The game suddenly became competitive again, Page, Kedze and Twum all went close for Rovers, but it was Abbey who almost forced an equaliser, when Rovers failed to clear a corner and Ben Kersley headed against the bar.

Full time came with Rovers picking up the win, and runners up spot behind Chertsey Town.
