AFC Wimbledon’s players will not be having a Christmas party as the club fights relegation after sinking to the bottom of the League One table.

The Dons fell to their seventh consecutive defeat away from home against Charlton as an injured Lyle Taylor found the net against his former team.

He met Nicky Ajose’s driven cross into the box for the deadlock breaker before substitute Mark Marshall came off the bench to finish off the tie.

Despite both sides being reduced to 10 men through red cards, both sides looked evenly matched, but Charlton’s decisive finishing meant Wimbledon left southeast London pointless.

The Dons are now 24th in League One, with 15 points from 22 games so far.

Wimbledon boss Wally Downes said: “I incentivised the players – if they can get two positive results then they can go.

“It had been arranged before I came but I don’t think this is really a position for us to be going on a Christmas party.

“The lads know that and agree to it.”

The new Dons manager, who took charge of his second game against the Addicks, was left angered by referee Trevor Kettle’s decision to show Mitch Pinnock a second yellow card after half an hour.

Pinnock was booked on 20 minutes for a late sliding challenge before he was adjudged by both the referee and the nearside linesman to have dived against Patrick Bauer.

Downes was told by the officials there was no contact between the two players but he insists they made an error in their respective judgements.

He added: “I thought we were unfortunate for it to be 2-0, because at 1-0 we were back in the game.

“I thought we were pressing on. The substitutes we made had made a difference in the second half.

“We were unfortunate not to get an equaliser and it stung a little bit to get done right at the end because we’d worked so hard and came closer.

“They [Charlton] had the ball but we were always comfortable in the first half. They didn’t really cause any problems, we know how they were going to play and set out our stall accordingly.

“I was comfortable at half time. I said they had a game in midweek and we were going to be stronger in the game if Mitch Pinnock doesn’t get sent off.”
