Harlequins are no longer as reliant on their club’s ‘big-hitters’ according to James Chisholm.

Despite being able to re-call Mike Brown, Joe Marchant and Nathan Earle to the starting XV for their 20-7 win against Newcastle, Chisholm believes the club have new character brought around by the new coaching staff.

“We’ve often struggled during the international period in the past,” said the 23-year-old.

“But feel like we are getting over that. The way we grind out results now we’ve got more about us, and we aren’t looking to those guys as much.”

Paul Gustard and his coaching team have guided the Quins to three wins from seven and puts them fifth in the Gallagher Premiership. Chisolm believes the appointment of the former Saracens’ man has rejuvenated the quarter coloured outfit.

“It was the same for a very long time, but I think the change in coaches refreshed the group.

“People want to press, impress and push for places.

“I feel like we are getting better. Even in games we’ve lost I’ve felt like we’ve improved. We’re picking up points and momentum.

“We want to keep pushing, sneak in the top four and see what we can do from there.”

Brown came straight back in to the starting XV after being released by Eddie Jones and was instrumental in Francis Saili’s second half try. Chisolm still believes 72-cap international Brown has plenty to give the game.

“It’s a big shame for Mike, we still feel he’s playing good rugby and deserves to be in the mix, but it’s great having him here at Quins as he’s a winner, that’s the way he’s wired.”

Accompanying Chisholm in the back row was try scorer Alex Dombrandt. The 21-year-old has been getting rave reviews from those at the club since his summer arrival from Cardiff Met Uni and Chisholm believes he’s the exact ball-carrying back the club needs.

“He’s playing well, he was an unknown identity at the start but he’s stepped up every wee, and shown what he’s about. It’s great to play in the back row with him.”
