Dean Smith says the officials “lost control” of the game as 10-man Brentford rescued a late point against Reading in a controversial and pulsating clash.

Referee Geoff Eltringham was “throwing cards around like confetti” according to the Bees boss, while seven players were booked and 10 minutes of injury time were added on.

Despite Said Benrahma being sent off, Yoann Barbet scored in the 92nd minute as Neal Maupay’s ninth league goal was cancelled out by Jon Bodvarsson and John Swift.

Smith said: “It was a crazy game. I've never seen anything like it in all my years in football, and I've certainly never been involved when there have been 10 minutes of added time.

"There were no bookings for 50 minutes and then he was throwing cards around like confetti. We've had six yellows and they had one, and even then he [Eltringham] got the wrong man.

"Reading came to slow the game down and the officials lost control.”

Daniel Bentley will feel aggrieved with how the two goals were conceded as Reading forced their way back into the match.

Stoppages for fouls and bookings were major talking points in the open and fast-paced affair.

Despite ruing the missed chances to win, Smith believes there are positives to take from the draw ahead of the midweek Championship clash with Birmingham City.

He added: “If I was a fan I would be writing in and asking why the ball was out of play so much in the second-half. If the officials are strong enough they will deal with that.

“I thought we looked confident but Daniel is disappointed because he has made two mistakes.

“We feel like we've lost the game although we'll take the positives of coming from behind to get a point with 10 men."
