A Barnes primary school teacher has been praised by the chair of Richmond Council’s Education and Children’s Service Committee for winning a recognition award.

Councillor Penny Frost congratulated Barnes Primary School teacher, Rachel Wilson, for being honoured as STEM teacher of the year at the London Teacher of the Year Awards.

The ceremony – organised by Inspire Schools, recognised teaching in London for the first time and celebrated all areas of education including teachers who encouraged their students to explore science, technology and mathematics (STEM) subjects.

Cllr Frost said: “This is a fantastic achievement for Rachel and wonderful recognition of the quality of STEM teaching at Barnes Primary. Congratulations!”

The Government and business leaders recognise that studying STEM subjects are vital for the country's economic survival and recognise the need to introduce more girls to subjects where they are largely underrepresented.

Mark Hartley, Headteacher at Barnes Primary School said:“Rachel has made a significant positive difference, over an extended time frame, to the quality of teaching at this school and at other schools.

“Her fascination with science is infectious. Both directly, as a classroom teacher, and more indirectly, by empowering other professionals, Rachel has inspired the next generation with a love for science.”
