A man was killed when he fell on to train tracks during rush hour at Twickenham station.

Eyewitnesses said the 33-year-old man, from Twickenham, suffered a "fit" and fell on to tracks at a packed platform, just before 6.20pm on Friday.

One commuter, posting on the Richmond and Twickenham Times website under the name Milroach, said: “My train arrived at the station just before the lad ended up on the railway tracks.

“People just started screaming and running.

“There was a panic as an oncoming train pulled into the platform and people were waving at the train to stop.

“He was lying face down on the track."

He said the man had been about a metre from the platform before he fell. He was told by other witnesses that the man had been shaking before he fell.

The commuter, from Teddington, said: “If it was a fit it is totally tragic that it happened then and there as no one could have saved him.”

The man is believed to have fallen from platform four at the station, which was filled with rush hour commuters at the time.

Passengers were kept on a train heading towards Windsor and Eton for more than 20 minutes while police and ambulance crew dealt with the incident.

Julie Hill, from Sherland Road, Twickenham, was close to the station at the time.

She spoke to a woman who witnessed the incident.

She said: “Apparently the lad had had an epileptic fit and other people had seen him wobble and fall onto the live tracks.

“She [the woman] seemed very upset so it must have been awful for those who actually witnessed it.

“I saw a fire engine, ambulances and pretty much the entire fleet of cars from Twickenham police station."

A spokeswoman for British Transport Police, who are dealing with the incident, said it was not being treated as suspicious.

She said: “Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service also attended the incident, which was reported to police at 6.25pm, but the man, believed to be a 33-year-old from Twickenham, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The incident is currently being treated as non-suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

The man's name has not yet been released.

A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “We were called at 6:20pm on Friday to Twickenham station to reports of an incident.

“We sent a duty manager and two ambulance crews, but sadly a man was dead at the scene.”
