The A316 has re-opened after a man who was threatening to jump off a footbridge by Old Deer Park was talked down by police.
The road was shut between Richmond Circus and St Margarets roundabout.
Police were called at 5.27am and closed the stretch of road as a precaution.
A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said that after two hours of negotiation the 39-year-old man left the bridge with officers and agreed to be placed under the Mental Health Act.
Drivers were advised to find alternative routes if possible.
Long tailbacks were reported on the one-way system in Richmond and back to Hospital Bridge Road, Twickenham, on the A316.
