Men at risk from attack by strangers are one of the targets of a new personal safety initiative.
Crime figures for 1996 show men are more at risk of being attacked by a stranger and 18- to 25-year-olds are the most vulnerable.
The Suzy Lamplugh Trust's Personal Safety Week runs from October 12 to 16. It aims to offer advice which people of all ages can use to help prevent them becoming the victims of violence.
Diana Lamplugh, director of the East Sheen-based trust, wants each person in the UK to improve their safety: "Through buying a personal alarm, learning how to handle aggression at work or changing travel habits and patterns," she said.
A different theme will be addressed each day during the week, including personal safety for young people, personal safety for the community, and personal safety at work.
