The death of King George VI and the accession of Queen Elizabeth were referred to at Tuesday's meeting of Richmond Council. The Mayor (Councillor CC Cooper) quoted a telegram he had sent Her Majesty the Queen Mother and the reply. He asked members of the council and the public to stand in most sincere memory of the King, and to remember with thanksgiving his life, his leadership and devotion to all of his subjects.
A resolution opposing education cuts on the grounds that they would bring growing hardship to students and teachers, and proposing that protests should be sent to the Minister of Education, the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Surrey Education Committee, was passed after a debate at Vernon Hall, Mortlake, on Tuesday between members of the Young Liberals, Labour League of Youth and the Young Communists' League. The Young Conservatives declined an invitation to attend.
