Schools were closed and commuters faced chaos today – but the bad weather looks set to continue, with more snow forecast for the weekend.

Delighted youngsters hit the slopes to go sledging as 48 schools failed to open this morning, and 16 stayed closed yesterday.

Andrew Ewing Primary School, in Heston, will be shut until Monday after cold weather caused its heating to break down.

Train passengers faced misery as delays and cancellations hit the rail network, and Hounslow Council had to cancel rubbish collections due to the icy conditions.

South West Trains (SWT) operated a special timetable on Wednesday, and said it was closely monitoring forecasts.

But Met Office warned the worst is yet to come.

More snow was expected in south-west London today, with heavier snowfalls through Saturday and Sunday.

About 70 per cent of train services were running on Wednesday, with delays at most stations.

No trains operated between Teddington and Shepperton, or between Waterloo and Hampton Court.

Yesterday, commuters at Vauxhall station were told no trains were running to or from Teddington, because “train crews could not get to work”, however an SWT spokesman denied this and said it had been forced to prioritise the busiest routes.

He said: “In order to get as many people moving as possible, we have had to prioritise the busiest routes and we are doing well on the routes that are going.

“We are confident we will be able to run all day, but we would advise people to check the live service information on our website before travelling.”

SWT said it returned to a normal timetable yesterday, but many passengers still faced delays.

Transport for London (TfL) said on Wednesday most Tube lines, the DLR, overground lines and London Tramlink were running a good service.

He said “a very small number” of bus routes had been diverted.
