The sun was shining and the competition was strong at Shenley and District Horticultural Society's Annual Autumn Show on Saturday.

More than 300 people came along to watch the show, and view the magnificent specimens grown in the village this year, despite the recent heatwave.

Show secretary Paul Davidson said: "There was an excellent turn out, the floral arrangements were good, and everyone had a really nice day."

This year was the show's 61st, and the society is drawing in new members all the time, with 36 new members exhibiting at the show.

But club president Charlie Herbert did not have such a good show, as he was not recognised when he first arrived, and was somewhat suprised to be asked to pay the 50p admission fee.

The prizewinners were: Helen Lewis: Floral Art Trophy; Kathleen Stocker: Bush Trophy; Ron Brew: Walter Ruck; Brian Poole: Hayes Challenge; Susan Cleasby: Letch Cup; Peter Breward: Harrison Memorial; R Brew: Blue Ribbon; Yvonne Perry: Ladies Cup; AG Cole: Flashman Trophy; N Barlow: Blake Trophy; Peter Breward: Boswell Trophy; Sam Laanest: Children's Cup; Peter Breward: Marchant Cup.
