The UK is home to many scenic landscapes, from the mountains of the Scottish Highlands to the great lakes of Cumbria and even the urban layout of London.

But now, an often forgotten scape has been given the time to shine as the Independent has named the nine best lakes in the UK with one London spot making the list.

In the UK, there are more than 40,000 lakes, all offering peace and tranquillity.

While lakes are great, it is important to know that local councils have rules on whether you can enter them, so it's worth checking before jumping in.

Why Serpentine Lake in London is among the best in the UK

The Serpentine Lake in Hyde Park is widely known for the open water lido that is home to the Serpentine Swimming Club members.

The lake is buzzing with punters in the warmer months, with pedalo hire on offer for either 30 to 60 minutes, allowing you to set sail on the Serpentine without getting wet.

The space has endless spots to sit down and relax for a picnic, with the surrounding park's green-cut grass.

If you don't fancy bringing your own picnic, you can enjoy a few drinks and food at Serpentine Bar and Kitchen or the Serpentine Lido Cafe.

On the online review site Tripadvisor, the Serpentine has a rating of 4/5 with more than 60 five-star reviews.
