Young striker James Collins is undertaking a trial period at Sheffield Wednesday.

The 19-year-old played for the Hornets Under-21s as recently as March 15, scoring twice in the second half of an epic 5-3 win over Ipswich Town at London Colney in a game where they trailed 3-0 at half-time.

However, since then Collins has headed north and linked up with the Owls.

He started for Wednesday at their Middlewood Road training ground on Friday as they took on Queens Park Rangers, and played his part in a 3-1 victory that took them up to second in the Professional Development League table.

Collins joined the Hornets in January 2023 from Hertford Town, and impressed during a trial period which saw him play for the Under-18 and Under-21 teams, notching goals for both.

He subsequently signed a one-year professional contract in the summer, with the club having the option to offer him a further year.

In August 2023, Collins was an unused substitute in Watford’s 1-0 defeat to Stoke City in the Sky Bet Championship.

Towards the end of last year he spent a spell on loan at Royston Town of the Southern League Premier Central Division, making three appearances.

Last month he had another spell away from Watford, this time making six appearances for Isthmian Premier League club Haringey Borough.

• Under-21s midfielder Junior Gyamfi continued his loan spell at Hemel Hempstead on Saturday, helping them earn a point away at Dartford.

The 1-1 draw ended a run of six straight defeats for the Tudors. Hornets keeper Jonathan Macaulay, also on loan with Hemel, was on the bench.

• Goalkeeper Gabriel Ortelli started again on Saturday during his loan spell at Kings Langley, but was unable to prevent a 2-0 defeat away at Biggleswade Town.

Ortelli, 17, has extended his stay with Kings until the end of the season, but forward Michael Adu-Poku has returned to Watford after his loan ended.

• Watford Under-21s travel to Barnsley tomorrow (Tuesday), for a Premier League Development League South fixture that kicks off at 2pm.
