Brentford boss Andy Scott has revealed new signing Adam Newton has made a financial commitment' to switch to Griffin Park - but stopped short of confirming he had taken a pay cut.

Newton saw his contract, which had a year to run, with Peterborough United terminated this week, before penning a one-year deal with the Bees.

Talks over the 27-year-old's proposed move had stalled earlier in the summer.

Posh director of football Barry Fry claimed the Bees could not match the out-of-favour right-back's wages at London Road.

However, a change of heart from the player saw Newton, a former England U21 inter-national, complete the move this week, taking to six Scott's summer recruitment spree.

"It looked like it wasn't going to happen at several stages, but we managed to rekindle the interest and everyone involved in the deal was able to agree," the manager said.

"He has made a financial commitment to come here.

"The offer we made to him didn't change during all our discussions.

"I don't know what happened at Peterborough's end, but Adam had expressed a desire to leave and the fact we had shown a strong interest in taking him was a deciding factor.

"He is the right sort of age with plenty of experience, having got promoted last year, and is versatile enough to play several positions."

Scott has also stepped up efforts to bolster his midfield before pre-season training gets under way on Monday, opening talks with Yeovil Town midfielder Marvin Williams.

The 21-year-old former Millwall trainee is out of favour at Huish Park but Scott admits he is not the only player he is keeping tabs on at this stage.

"Marvin is one of a number of players we are speaking with," he said.

"I am in talks with his agent and wouldn't be doing that if I wasn't keen to bring him to the club, but that is as far as we have got so far.

"He is a young player and is very quick.

"Yeovil paid a fee for him last summer, but injuries hampered him and I would like to see him recapture his form with us.

"I think he is another player who can excite the crowd next season and add something to what we are trying to do."

Newton's arrival has softened the blow of former Bees skipper Matt Heywood's departure to Grimsby Town, which was confirmed on Wednesday after weeks of speculation.

But Scott insists the move came as no surprise to him, despite making the player the best offer possible.

"I had resigned myself to losing Matt a while ago and we are still pursuing several interests with regards to a replacement," he added.

"It is no secret we are still short in that department and we must move on quickly."
