A house fire in Bexley was caused by the “unsafe disposal of a cigarette”, according to London Fire Brigade (LFB).
Four fire engines and 25 firefighters reported to Dorchester Avenue on January 14 at 1.36pm.
The Brigade tackled the fire in a two-storey mid-terraced house, where a "large part" of the first floor was damaged.
One woman and a child left the house before emergency services arrived.
They were both treated for smoke inhalation at the scene by London Ambulance Service.
The fire was under control by 3.09pm.
The cause of the fire is believed to be the “unsafe disposal of a cigarette.”
Fire crews from Sidcup, Bexley and Erith fire stations attended the scene.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “We'd rather you didn't smoke at all, but if you are a smoker it's absolutely vital you ensure your cigarette is completely out when you've finished smoking it.
"If you don't, you risk causing a fire which could not only destroy your home but also cost you your life."
LFB's safety advice for smokers:
- It's safer to smoke outside, but make sure cigarettes are put right out and disposed of properly.
- Never smoke in bed and avoid smoking on armchairs and sofas – especially if you think you might fall asleep.
- Use proper ashtrays, which can’t tip over and stub cigarettes out properly.
- Always empty ashtrays carefully. Make sure smoking materials are out, cold and preferably wet them before throwing into a bin – never use a wastepaper basket.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Four fire engines and 25 firefighters were called to a house fire on Dorchester Avenue in Bexley.
“Firefighters tackled a fire in a two-storey mid-terraced house where a large part of the first floor was damaged by the fire.
“One woman and child left the house before the Brigade arrived.
“They were both treated for smoke inhalation by London Ambulance Service crews at the scene.
“The Brigade was called at 1336 and the fire was under control by 1509.
“Fire crews from Sidcup, Bexley and Erith fire stations attended the scene.
“The cause of the fire is believed to be the unsafe disposal of a cigarette.”
