This week, we’re shining a spotlight on the Knights, Richmond’s very own basketball team.

Established in 2009, the Knights have become one of the largest junior development basketball programmes in the UK, coaching over 1,500 players every week.

The team trains at Waldegrave School in Twickenham, and is on a mission to provide opportunities that “inspire, develop and succeed” for players both on the basketball court and beyond.

The Knights entered the Men's National Basketball League in 2017 and completed the player pathway from junior to senior basketball.

The team began by playing in the lowest division of the England Basketball National League in 2017. Now, they are entering this season in Division Two.

Captain of the team, Aaron Moseley, says he got into basketball because it was “fun” and “exhilarating”.

“I was into a lot of sports when I was younger – swimming and football, but basketball is a really exciting game, there’s always something going on.

He is urging the community to participate in, spectate and support the Richmond team.

“This year we are looking to start some new initiatives partly in response to COVID-19 but also in the spirit of raising awareness of basketball in the country, getting more young people active and also helping promote and support other local clubs and businesses.”

Richmond Knights are currently playing friendlies, but the league season will run from October through to April.

A “high-profile” pre-season game will kick off the season, against a team USA Select, a team from America.
