CLAP For Carers will be making a return to tonight for the first time in months.

The weekly applause is back under the new name of Clap For Heroes and takes place at 8pm.

It originally started during the first lockdown in March and saw people taking to their doorsteps, windows and balconies to celebrate NHS staff and key workers helping to keep the country running.

Annemarie Plas, who came up with the weekly ritual that ran for ten weeks during the first lockdown, tweeted: β€œWe are bringing back the 8pm applause, in our 3rd lockdown.

β€œI hope it can lift the spirit, of all of us. Carers teacher, homeschooling parents, those who shield and ALL who is pushing through this difficult time! Please join & share! #clapforheroes.”

The Daily Echo carried out a poll on Twitter asking people if they would be taking part.

Seventy-five per cent of people said they would not be joining in, with nine per cent saying they would.

And 15 per cent of people said they were undecided.

One person responded: β€œIt's a resounding NO. Of course we love and support our health workers. Better to give them financial and emotional support from within?”

Another said: β€œNo disrespect but no , it has had its time and it was good while it lasted , it ended when it should have. I really think that the majority of drs , nurses , heroes etc will agree.”

And one person said that while they did it the first time, they believed that takes attention away from the "main issue".

They said: β€œAbsolutely not doing it again. Did it first time but attitude of government to pay and conditions is not right Clapping them diverts attention away from the main issue Treat them properly Pandemic highlights that NHS has been chronically underfunded for years.”
