A local legend and ferry owner is due to make his final voyage next week, with a procession down Twickenham's Church Street ahead of his funeral.

'Captain' Francis Spencer of Hammertons Ferry sadly passed away on November 29, aged 74, after battling cancer.

Half of the father-son team behind the ferry service, Francis was well known for his upbeat personality, kindness and consideration.

His funeral procession will pass down Church Street next Tuesday, January 5 between 9.15-9.30am.

A statement from the family read: "The wonderful people of Richmond and Twickenham .

"We wanted to let you know that our hero ‘Francis Spencer’ will be laid to rest Tuesday 5th January 2021.

"If you would like to join us, the Captain’s final journey will take place along an ‘open’ Church street, thanks to the kindness of the Richmond council - between 9.15-9.30am towards St Mary’s church.

"Seeing your faces either side of the street - even at a social distance would bring us a fragment of comfort on an otherwise poignant day.

"We wish we could celebrate his incredible life properly with you, but that will have to wait.

"Many have asked if they can contribute flowers but my dad's wish was for any donations to be for the amazing British heart foundation, a charity close to his heart. Your love and support has been amazing."
