THE funeral has been held for a football fan who suffered horrendous injuries in a hooligan attack in Southend.

Simon Dobbin, 48, was left brain-damaged in the assault after a match in Southend back in 2015.

The Cambridge United fan died in his sleep at his home in Mildenhall, Suffolk, on October 21 this year, and an outpouring of grief followed.

Today, mourners, friends and loved ones of Mr Dobbin lined the route of the funeral cortege as it made its way to the church of his home town.

A private service followed, with his closest family and friends, due to the restrictions around the Covid-19 pandemic.

The funeral service began at St Mary's Church at 12.30pm today.

Mr Dobbin was left unable to walk, talk or move independently when he was attacked after a match against Southend United on March 21, 2015.

In July 2017, 12 men were jailed for the assault of Mr Dobbin.

Simon's wife Nicole Dobbin paid tribute to her husband after he died, saying that she "felt numb".

Essex Police confirmed that they would be reviewing the case into the assault of Mr Dobbin as to whether to bring further charges to his attackers.

At this stage, the review is still in progress.
