A care home in Wandsworth Common has joined 11 others in a Facebook Live Knickerbocker Glory Challenge, hosted by MasterChef 2016 winner Jane Devonshire.

Enthusiastic residents and carers followed along as the TV chef constructed the perfect Knickerbocker Glory dessert from her home, before choosing winners from each respective care home.

Staggered into three separate live sessions, the ice cream challenges gathered over 6,500 views on Facebook and appeared on 45,000 timelines.

Simon Dickinson, Sales and Brand Director at Signature Care Homes, said it was important to keep residents engaged on social media, when they risked feeling isolated by the pandemic.

“Our residents’ happiness and wellbeing is our number one priority, so we have worked hard to ensure that we can still provide fun activities for them while adapting and adhering to the current situation.

"The challenge was a resounding success with excellent feedback from residents who enjoyed the day. Our teams will continue to be inventive as we look to roll out new initiatives, all delivered with humour, kindness and empathy,” he said.

A classic British dessert, the Knickerbocker Glory is a layered ice cream sundae containing ice cream, cream, fruit, and meringue, created in the 1920s.

Jane Devonshire, winner of MasterChef in 2016, said:

"Some dishes are just so nostalgic and delicious that it was lovely to see the residents and staff having such fun and eating delicious desserts together.

“It was such a huge joy to be part of the Signature Knickerbocker Glory Challenge day."

Signature Care Homes has facilities across London and the Home Counties, which are all currently COVID-19 free.
