Extinction Rebellion are planning a silent 'smybolic' protest outside the Woolwich Centre this weekend, protesting against the government and council's failure in responding to the Covid-19 pandemic and climate emergency.
According to Extinction Rebellion Greenwich, members will be stage a silent, socially distanced action outside the centre at midday on Saturday, May 30.
The climate change activism group are well known for their high-profile protests across London, recently staging demonstrations against the Silvertown Tunnel plans.
The group say the government has failed the public by ignoring the science during the coronavirus pandemic, and are doing the same with the climate and ecological crisis.
A spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion Greenwich said that coronavirus has shown us that change is possible when the political will is there, and that "there can be no going back to the way things were" as "it is normal that is killing us."
They claim that there has never been a more pressing time to redesign the way we live, and are therefore standing outside the local council offices in a silent protest to send a message to the government "to say we want to take back decision making power."
