Anyone with green fingers in Greenwich is being encouraged to enter into a bold council gardening competition, celebrating bright & blossoming gardens.

Greenwich in Bloom, the council's yearly gardening contest, has returned and with many residents turning to their gardens during lockdown, this year's iteration promises much.

Anyone can enter, with four staple categories, the front garden, back garden, communal garden and, for those without gardens, a containers category for hanging baskets, window boxes or pots.

New this year is a children's category, showcasing the talents of younger residents.

The competition is open for nearly the entire month of June from Friday May 29 to Sunday June 28, with a new photo-based judgement system due to lockdown.

The entries will be assessed by independent judges who are the Cabinet Member for Culture and Communities Adel Khaireh, the Mayor Linda Bird and the Deputy Mayor Denise Hyland.

Prizes in the main four categories are £100 for first palce, £50 for second and £25 for third in vouchers for Coolings Garden Centre.

Coolings have kindly donated £300 in vouchers to the prize fund and the Council shall purchase the rest.

Coolings Garden Centre has supported the competition for many years and we are happy to be able to support a valued local business, whilst also giving away some great prizes.
For the children's category, there’s a £15 voucher for the winner, whilst every child that enters will get a packet of seeds.

Adel Khaireh, Cabinet Member for Culture and Communities, said: "As the new Cabinet Member for Culture and Communities I am so happy to be involved with this year’s Greenwich in Bloom competition.

"Gardening is good for both physical and mental wellbeing and colourful flowers really do brighten up the borough. I’m looking forward to seeing the variety of entries from our talented Greenwich gardeners."
