Businesses in Watford have joined hands during the pandemic and delivered more than 10,000 doughnuts so far to hospital staff.

The generous donation - delivered to Watford General Hospital every morning courtesy of Wenzels - is just one of the many things the Watford Chamber of Conscience is doing for the community.

The group, set up by the Watford and West Herts Chamber of Commerce, has already donated a hundred iPhones to patients so they can keep in touch with their families. And it has donated video units, coffee machines, refreshments and sweet treats, face masks, gloves, gowns and toiletries to the hospital.

On Saturday, it will work with Home Start and Small Acts of Kindness to deliver meals to elderly and isolated families.

Watford FC, one of the businesses involved in the movement, has turned its stadium into a sanctuary for Watford General Hospital staff.

Executive boxes at the ground have been transformed into six bedrooms, with beds being supplied by the Grove Hotel. The club hopes to create four more bedrooms.

There are also counselling rooms, a training centre, a call centre, meeting rooms, a feeding area and an area for hospital workers to relax.

Dozens of other businesses are involved in the do-good movement, including: Costco, Warner Bros Studios, The Grove, Tesco, Cisco and Rosalyn Graham.

The Chamber of Conscience was set up earlier this month to help NHS staff who are battling the pandemic. The idea is that health professionals can come to the group to ask for donations or help, and local businesses can then work together to respond to the requests.

Within a week of the launch, its Whatsapp group had about 20 members.

Operations director for the chamber, Saffron Johnson said: "The Watford Chamber of Commerce has put a huge amount of work into the last 18 months and has introduced the Chamber of Conscience to the business community with some incredible results.

"The philosophy is simple: it’s a network of goodwill connecting commerce with community.

"Watford is a really incredible place and the community is fantastic. Now, more than ever, we need as many businesses as possible to sign up and join in. The bigger the network the more we can help."

The Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, Robert Voss CBE, has also been working with his 49 deputies and the Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce to find businesses that are willing to donate items to people in need across the county.

He is asking businesses to use their contacts to see if they can donate or to get in touch with other businesses who would like to get involved.

He has been in touch with hospices and care homes in the county and has compiled a donation list which includes hand sanitisers, disposable gowns, aprons, air beds and disinfectant wipes.
