A petition has been launched to name a hospital after Captain Tom Moore who raised more than £29 million for the NHS.

John Wagstaff, 45, from South Oxhey set up the petition a week ago, after he heard the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson was looking to find ways to recognise Mr Moore for his efforts.

In his speech on Monday (April 27), Mr Johnson also mentioned the war veteran and his "spirit of optimism" when addressing the nation.

Mr Moore raised money for the NHS by walking 100 laps of his garden at his home in Bedfordshire before his 100th birthday, which is tomorrow (April 30).

Mr Wagstaff's petition, which needs 10,000 signature for the Government to respond, is asking for a hospital to be named after Mr Moore.

His petition is just one of many which is calling for Mr Moore to receive recognition for the money he has raised, some suggesting he should be given a knighthood.

Mr Wagstaff's petition currently has less than 1000 signatures.

He said: "He is a national hero. He was in the Second World War and he has now come out and done this.

"He has inspired a lot other people to follow after him.

"He received the Pride of Britain Award and he got a UK number one single, it's amazing."
