A rescue centre said it is "desperately short of funds" after closing due to coronavirus pandemic.

The National Animal Welfare Trust (NAWT) located in Tylers Way, Watford is appealing for donations.

The trust was forced to close its site on the A41 to visitors and volunteers last month. But staff still need to care for 28 dogs, 13 cats, six guinea pigs, five rabbits, two degus, one pig, one rooster, several hens and a tortoise.

Due to the closure, the trust is no longer receiving income from their onsite cafe and it has had to postpone fundraising events.

According to staff, these events are vital as the trust does not receive government funding and relies heavily on donations.

The trust said it still needs to pay staff, settle vet bills and buy supplies.

Centre manager Jackie De Friez said: "We know life is difficult for everyone right now but if anyone can afford to make a donation, however small, it will go a long way in helping us feed and look after the many animals in our care.

"With things a bit tight at the moment every penny helps and we would really appreciate it."
