NEW Year’s resolutions are starting to wear thin.

People who promised never to touch chocolate again in a haze of personal renaissance are starting to have their heads turned.

A cursory glance at a cupcake as you waltz past bakery windows, a longing look at a litre of coke as you poor a paltry tap water, the warning signs are there that the new fitness habit may be about to crumble.

Fortunately, a new store in St James’s Street, Brighton, is hoping to make it easier for visitors to enjoy tasty treats without worrying about their waistlines.

Greens And Grains is looking to open early next month, offering customers a smoothie and salad bar.

Owner Caner Aksu said he had watched as the market for health foods had exploded in recent years, and now the 31-year-old wants to bring this trend to the city centre street.

He has put a sign in the store’s window to say it is “coming soon” and, judging by the reaction of passersby, they are very much supportive of his endeavours.

Caner said: “People are excited, they are already coming up to me and to the shop and asking when we will be opening.

“They have already been so welcoming.”

He and his partner are currently putting the final touches to the venue. “I think it’s good to do these things yourself,” he said – and he hopes to have the bar ready in the next few weeks.

Caner said: “We are trying to make a nice, cosy place where everything is made right in front of the customer.

“It can be a takeaway or about 20 people can sit in here, and we are hoping to have a seating area outside as well.

“We will have smoothies as our main thing, but also want to serve healthy Mediterranean and breakfast foods cooked with less oil.”

It is his first time owning a business in the UK, having previously managed a company in Turkey.

But the former teacher has since spent time living in London and also resided in Scotland for more than a year, admitting he is “looking forward to the weather down here”.

Though recent evidence may bely the facts, with Storms Ciara and Dennis battering the South East in recent weeks, there can be as much as a 20C temperature difference between northern Scotland and the South East.

He said: “I am hoping it will be warmer down here.

“We are so close to the beach, so will hopefully have lots of people come up here.”

Caner said he could not wait for this summer’s Pride celebrations and relished the opportunity to be right in the thick of it with his St James’s Street outlet.

He said: “I have not been in Brighton for Pride before but I have seen pictures and videos and it looks amazing.

“I am definitely looking forward to it.”

Brighton Pride weekend will be celebrated on the weekend of August 1 and will see the city filled with an estimated 450,000 people.

St James’s Street hosts several street parties and revellers flock to the area to continue celebrations after the annual parade.
