The Environmental Agency has warned that the risk of flooding continues after yesterday's extremely high tide resulting in flooding along the Thames.

Following the strong winds and heavy rain brought by Storm Ciara over the weekend, several flood alerts were put in place over the past two days and people have been in touch with photos of flooding alongside the Thames.

The Thames Barrier was forced to close its flood gates yesterday in order to protect London from extreme tidal flooding after the 3rd highest tide it has had to deal with was measured.

There is some uncertainty in the forecast, but the barrier is due to close again today due to concerns for east and west London.

The Environmental Agency has now issued a further flood alert along the coast at Dartford, Gravesend and Northfleet, and has urged caution as the flood risk continues over the next couple of days.

Caroline Douglass, Flood Duty Manager at the Environment Agency, said that following the widespread heavy rain brought by Storm Ciara, river flooding remains a risk, adding that there were teams currently out operating flood defences and supporting affected communities.

She stated: "Over the weekend our teams operated the Thames Barrier, Foss Barrier and Hull Barrier as well as flood storage reservoirs in the Salford area and in Lancashire.

"We are checking defences after the severe weather and are operating them as needed to help keep people and properties safe.

"Further heavy showers are expected to continue today, tomorrow and into Wednesday meaning that minor flooding impacts are possible."
