Chirk school memories came under the spotlight this week as the town became the latest stop-off for researchers from Wrexham Museum.

The researchers, led by exhibitions officer Jonathan Gammond, were at Chirk Library, in Chapel Lane, had appealed for old school photographs covering the many decades in history.

The call for pictures is part of a brand-new exhibition opening soon, with the research work starting at the library back in November last year.

They were inundated with pictures ranging from the 1960s until recent years, leaving Mr Gammond delighted with the support received so far, but he also insisted more was needed as part of the project.

"It's called 'Back-to-School' and it's about how schools have changed in the Wrexham area over the years," he said.

"This session is about getting out to see people in different places as before, we don't want it to be just Wrexham central.

"So because of that, we've taken the sessions into the other towns like Chirk.

"We just want to get as many school pictures as possible. It would be nice to have a nice variety of pictures from older to modern."

One visitor to the session was a former teacher called Marian Morris, who worked at Chirk Infants which is opposite the library.

She said: "It was lovely to bring these pictures in and bring back all the nice memories.

"I was a teacher for 40 years but I used to run a playgroup there too."

The heritage project is also being documented by a community radio station who are making a call for oral histories about school days in the borough.

Paul Jeorrett, from Calon FC Community Radio, wants people to in touch regarding their school memories and you can do so at info@calonfm.com

The project is holding two further picture collecting sessions at satellite sites in Brynteg, Overton and Ruabon next month.

Brynteg is first on Saturday, starting at 10.30am until 12pm while the session at Ruabon Library runs from 2.30pm until 4.30pm on Thursday, February 6 while the final session will be at Overton Library two days later, running from 10.30am until 12.30pm.
