Promotion chasing Millwall are hoping to add Derby County forward Mason Bennett to their squad this month, according to reports.
Gary Rowett’s Lions have climbed the Championship table under the radar in the opening half of the season, currently sitting just one point outside the play-off places.
With a genuine possibility of gate-crashing the top-six, it’s thought Rowett is keen on a re-union with the 23-year-old who he worked with while at the Rams.
According to Football Insider, the Lions will use the player’s current contract dilemma to their advantage.
With his Derby deal expiring in the summer, and currently out of favour with manager Phillip Cocu, Millwall will tempt them into selling or risk losing him for free in the summer if contract talks aren’t successful.
Despite not finding the net in nine appearances this season, Rowett feels he would be an asset to a Millwall attack that lead by Jed Wallace and Tom Bradshaw who are leading the way with a modest nine and eight goals respectively.
Currently sidelined with an ankle injury, Bennett is expected back in action at the end of the month.
Some fans expressed their concern over the possibility of signing Bennett, having been involved in the car crash incident involving teammates Richard Keough and Tom Lawrence last year.
Rowett presumably knows all about him and must think he’s a good fit
