The Wimbledon constituency has been represented by the Conservative Party since 2005.

But from 1997 to 2005 it was a Labour seat. Since 2005 it has been represented by Stephen Hammond.

The MP was one of 21 Conservatives who lost the whip in September after voting against the government on a key Brexit vote.

He briefly sat as an Independent but was let back into the Conservative Party on October 20.

In the 2016 EU Referendum Merton overall voted to remain in the EU and in the Wimbledon constituency, 70.63 per cent of voters voted in favour of remaining in the EU.

Stephen Hammond – Conservative

Wimbledon Times:

Before going into politics Stephen Hammond had a career in finance. He lives in Wimbledon Park with wife Sally and daughter Alice, along with their three RSPCA rescue cats, Cleo, Bertie and Boots.

In 2005, Stephen was elected as the MP for Wimbledon and says he was honoured to be re-elected in 2010, 2015 and 2017.

Stephen sat as an Independent Member of Parliament for two months this year for voting to oppose a no-deal Brexit.

He served as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport (2012-14) and a Minister of State at the Department of Health and Social Care (2018-19).

Paul Kohler – Liberal Democrat

Wimbledon Times:

Paul has lived in Wimbledon for more than 30 years, with his wife and their four daughters.

He was head of the SOAS School of Law and owns a business in central London.

Last year he took the Mayor of London to court to save Wimbledon Police station from closure after he survived a brutal beating in 2014.

The initial court case was successful, but he now wants to see the station remain open for good.

He is currently a councillor representing Trinity ward and is the Unite to Remain candidate in Wimbledon.

Jackie Schneider - Labour

Wimbledon Times:

Jackie grew up in Mitcham and has lived in Wimbledon for 23 years, where she’s spent her teaching career working in local primary schools.

She has led campaigns to get better school food in Merton and keep Morden Park playing fields public.

Jackie said: “I’ve become increasingly exasperated by career politicians who fail to listen to the needs of their constituents and are unaffected by the decisions they take. It’s not good enough.”
