Year six children from various schools across Richmond gathered at York House Council Chamber for this year’s Pupil Parliament.

Two pupils from each school had the opportunity to debate and give speeches on important issues.

Richmond and Twickenham Times:

York House opened its doors to year-six-pupils from various schools across Richmond.

Cllr Nancy Baldwin, Mayor of Richmond, was in attendance to oversee proceedings and said:“I was delighted to take part in this event and witness future political stars debating an issue that affects their lives.

"It is a great opportunity to practice public speaking and to learn about the democratic system.

“I hope the children continue to take an active interest in local government as they progress through their education. I would like to congratulate Leahara and Max on their successful election!”

This year’s debate was ‘Should 16-year-olds be allowed to vote in elections?’.

Students gave passionate one-minute speeches on the topic, questioned speakers and voted for a Mayor and Deputy Mayor from ten finalists.

The young politicians voted Leahara from Hampton Hill Juniors as their Mayor and Max from St Mary’s C of E as their Deputy Mayor.

Leahara, the new Youth Mayor, added:“I’m very proud to have tried my best and been elected as Youth Mayor.

"It was a very interesting debate and a great opportunity to learn more about what the Mayor of Richmond does.

"The robe is very heavy and hot to wear!”
