Lee Bowyer’s ‘wildcard’ is enjoying life in a new role at The Valley.

Jonathan Leko arrived late in the transfer window as somewhat of an unknown quantity, with even his manger admitting you’re not sure what to expect from him.

But six games in the West Brom man has impressed both manager and fans alike with his attacking ability.

Deployed as a winger at Albion, the 20-year-old has played a more advanced role by Bowyer for Charlton, a positional change the England Youth international is relishing.

“It’s a new role but I’m enjoying it,” Leko said.

“And I’m just trying to learn from all the strikers around me.

“It suits me and I think I can do well there.

“I’m working on my hold up play, runs in behind and coming short and mixing up my game.

“And also getting on the end of crosses as well, I’ve got to work on that.”

Leko has a goal and two assists to his name for the Addicks, and now playing further he expects to improve those statistics.

Charlton’s leading scorer with five goals Lyle Taylor may be injured but Leko believes he’s already learned from the talismanic forward as he will no doubt be expected to chip in on the goalscoring charts in the former Wimbledon man’s absence.

“It’s a pleasure playing up front with Lyle Taylor.

“He has come through non-league so there is so much I can learn from him.

“As a person, he is always talking to me.

“He is teaching me things all the time, it’s great playing alongside him.”

'I'm improving'

Charlton travel to Wigan Saturday where Leko is expected to lead the line alongside fellow summer signing Tomer Hemed, and more minutes for Charlton justifies Leko’s decision to leave West Brom according to the attacker.

“He (West Brom manager Slaven Bilic) has been very positive with me,” said Leko.

“I knew he was going to bring in a couple of players but I told him I wanted to play.

“We had a chat and he understood.

“The more you play, the more you learn.

“I’m improving as a player at Charlton because I am playing.”
