The bus-stand area outside Morden Tube Station will look a little different this Sunday.

Instead of seeing the 157 or the 118 pull in, you will be seeing kids on bikes and bouncy castles.

That is because the area will be turned into a Play Street from 11.30am to 3.30pm on September 22 to coincide with World Car Free Day.

Cabinet member for adult social care, health and the environment Councillor Tobin Byers, said: “I am absolutely delighted that we have been able to secure a place in the heart of Morden so everyone can play or even dance in streets on World Car Free Day.

“Merton Council is backing the international campaign, which aims to reclaim the streets from the dominance of vehicles, as part of its ongoing drive to make the air cleaner in Merton and encourage more active lifestyles.

“This fun event will offer lots tips and ideas on how everyone can make small changes to their lifestyle, which will make a big difference to air quality in Merton. So I am urging everyone to give the car a day off and pop down to the bus-stand area outside Morden Tube Station and join in the fun.

“I would also like to thank all the groups of neighbours who applied to temporary close their roads to traffic for Play Street events so children across Merton can play freely and safely close to their own doorsteps on the day.”

The area will have attractions such as a “pedal and make your own” Smoothie Bike, a bouncy castle and music. The Dr Bike team will also be offering free cycle maintenance checks, minor repairs and advice.
