An online fundraiser set up to support victims of the Worcester Park fire has already raised more than £10,000.

Monday morning's blaze required 125 firefighters to be brought under control, destroying the homes and possessions of 23 families.

A fundraiser set up by local councillors Jenny Batt, Drew Heffernan and Hina Bokhari has already passed its initial £5000 goal, today reaching £14,000, following donations from more than 350 people.

Hina Bokhari, who is running for the Sutton and Cheam constituency, said: "The fire has upturned the lives of 23 families who've tragically lost their homes.

"The local community is determined to help them all and it's incredible that over £10,000 has been raised already.

"Speaking to residents sheltering in the rest centre set up at Maple Lodge, they are clearly devastated.

"I just want to assure them that they will get the help they need, and the incredible generosity of people who have donated these funds will help ensure that."

The distribution of the funds will be led by the Residents’ Association to enable residents to replace their belongings and rebuild their lives.

Members of the community have also been handing in physical donations to a drop off point at the Lincoln Hall, the Hamptons, where a team of volunteers continue working to distribute items and coordinate resources.

Organisers are currently appealing for new bras and knickers all sizes, men's boxers and pyjamas or loungewear in both men's and women's sizes.

Prepared food donations to feed affected residents, firefighters and Red Cross volunteers have also been requested.

Cllr Jenny Batt said: "It's been a sad and difficult time for the Hamptons community but it's been heartening to see residents pull together to help each other out.

"The funds raised will go towards that and a special thanks to our local businesses who have also kindly donated to the fundraiser.

"I also want to pay a real tribute to the residents' association for coordinating relief efforts and to our emergency services who worked so hard to get the incident under control."

The fire service and police have both launched investigations into the incident, the cause of which is currently unknown.

The developer behind the project, Berkley Group, said: “We continue to support the LFB in their investigation into what happened.

"In the meantime, our priority remains to make sure residents are properly looked after.”
