On August 22, young people in schools across the borough celebrated their GCSE success, with more pupils this year achieving a pass at grade 4 or above, in both English and maths, than last year.

As young people and parents went to collect the long-awaited results, Cllr Danny Thorpe, Leader of Greenwich council, and Cllr Jackie Smith, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services and Community Safety, took time to visit some local schools to meet the students and learn more about what they are planning to do next.

Cllr Danny Thorpe said: “The energy and enthusiasm of the young people I met today was incredible and I am delighted that so many have done so well and are continuing to study towards their A-Levels in our borough. Each student should be proud of their exam achievements, as should their teachers, and the parents and carers who offered their support.”

There were a number of high-achieving students in our borough, including Nawal Mohamid, who managed to achieve 100 per cent on her Further Maths paper, which is known as an ‘A hat’.

She is planning to go on to study medicine once she has completed her A-Levels.

Cllr Jackie Smith said: “Meeting young people and parents as they received news of their results was fantastic and I am thrilled that so many have done well. For those that didn’t get the grades they expected, there are several options and support available to them in the borough, and our fantastic teachers and advisors are all here to offer support towards the next exciting chapter.”
