Organisers of the Teddington Village Fair have said the future of the event is in doubt.

Despite stunning weather and plenty of visitors, this year's free festivity was only able to turn a "small profit", of which all proceeds of to charities.

Sheena Harold, chairman of the Teddington Society which co-organises of the event said the root of the problem was that sponsorship numbers were down a staggering 50 per cent on 2018.

“Although the Fair is entry free – and we wouldn’t want it any other way – we do have to pay for many things, especially the entertainment,” said said.

Richmond and Twickenham Times:

“This year the revived Pram Race yielded only a small cash return, and in the end the Village Fair profit was barely in the black.

“We had already promised donations to two local charities, so using money from our own funds the Society donated £600 each to Riding for the Disabled at Park Lane Stables and React, a Kew-based charity that helps children and their families with potentially terminal illness.”

She added that the only reason the event was able to turn a profit at all was down to the "continued support" of the present sponsors.

These include The Lensbury and Palmers Solicitors of Kingston, TW11 Magazines which provided free advertising, Beechgrove Print which waved its printing fee for the event, plus donations from Shambles Restaurant in Teddington and Vincenzo's Ice Cream.

Richmond and Twickenham Times:

“It’s almost unthinkable to imagine Teddington without its annual Village Fair," she added.

"But if future fairs don’t produce a profit, then we have to face the possibility that they become unsustainable.”

Ms Harold added that the key, of course, is sponsorship.

“It would be immensely sad if there were no Village Fair so if any companies, organisations or individuals would like to become involved in Teddington’s biggest fundraising event of the year, we’d be grateful and happy to hear from them and discuss options for next year’s event.”
