Aldi is finally revealing its plans for a new store in North Cheam – on the same site which saw enormous amounts of fly-tipped waste dumped in it last year.

The German supermarket giant withdrew its previous planning application and is now seeking additional feedback from residents before it submits a fresh one.

Aldi was forced to introduce “round-the-clock” security on the former Evans Autos site in London Road, which it owns, after it was beset by problems last year.

On two occasions shocking images revealed the vast amount of fly-tipped rubbish which was left by trespassers, understood to be travellers, on two separate occasions within a matter of months.

This included video footage which sowed several fridges, plastic chairs and broken furniture being among the waste left behind.

As the discount chain tried to get the situation under control, police were called to reports of travellers having parked up in the old car dealership before the trespassing group left a huge fly-tip behind them.

“Aldi would like to open a new store on London Road in Cheam,” the letter reads. “The previous planning application has been withdrawn and we would like to gather additional feedback from local people before progressing a new application.

“Members of the Aldi project team will be available to answer any questions and a selection of Aldi snacks will be available to sample.”

There have been mixed responses on social media - with some users welcoming the plans and others fearing the inadvertent problems that could arise.

Concerns include potential traffic problems and whether one in North Cheam is necessary given there is another Aldi roughly two miles away in Ewell.

The community open evening will be held in the Cedar Room, at North Cheam Sports and Social Club on May 1 between 5pm and 8pm.
